How to get Pfas out of drinking water – and keep it

Stotiber and his colleagues on the EWG look after consumer water filtration systems available in the United States. The organization’s tests found that offensive filters of pitchers from brands like brituders and Berkey do not remove all PFAS as well. But some do a great job, based on EWG tests, including the pitcher filter system made by the Epic Water Filter, the US-Based Firement.

“I would say that PFA is far contaminated number one we get feedback to worry about our customers,” says Joel Stevens, coated filters for epic water. Filters his company makes for their water pitchers include carbon block. “Thousands of thousands of layers of carbon fibers who are wrapped around the block,” he explains. While water prices through these fibers, carbon moves from PFA and other contaminants, including chlorine and guidance.

In about three months, the company will start a new pitcher filter that can also remove heavy metals and fluoride. Fluoride is added to water in some areas to improve dental health, although some people would rather not drink due to the potential link between fluoride and unfavorable neurological effects. The scientific analysis suggests that the risk of tap water in countries such as the USA, however, is extremely low.

Although there are some very effective water filtration products, says Stotiber, many people continue to throw spent trash filters, which means they finally end up on the landfills where the PFAS can again in the environment.

The buyers of epic water filters can return their consumed filters in the company. “Filters are then sent to a special recycling center in which the plastic is recycled, and the internal filters burn,” says Stevens in the email tracking.

Research Stotiber suggests that some forms of burning PFA materials can release harmful compounds into the environment. “We still don’t have good recommendations for postponing media for implementation,” she says. It is possible to terminate the PFAS connections, although, at extremely high temperatures, even as many as 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,730 F). Some researchers are currently investigating to make chemical additives such as granular active carbon reduce the amount of heat required for the degradation of PFAS compounds.

There is another problem with the current approaches to PFAS. “Treatment for drinking water at the community level is what is needed at this point, as costs should not fall into an individual,” says Stonober. “It should not be unfairly, who has a filter, which does not, which is exposed.”

While some American drinking water plants are now installed by PFA filtration technology, such as in Tampa, Florida, costs to do so through a nation can be spiraled in billions, according to some analyzes. Although Stonoiber says that the most effective strategy for PFA contamination does not use these chemicals, countless companies still work, and it could be long before they completely disappear from consumer products, if that ever happens.

For now, there is a risk that Trump administration could weaken new US water regulations that require the removal of some PFAS molecules from the supply of tap water, says Stoniber. “We fight to protect the laws on the drinking water that just passed,” she says. “I think all eyes are on it.”
