Inside the race to archive the US Government website

“We never saw something similar,” says David Kaye, a professor at the University of California, Irvine and former UN special rapporteur for freedom of opinion and expression. “I don’t think anyone knows exactly what’s going on. What we see if the government’s websites coming, a database of important public interest. The entire USAID website.”

But how government websites move dark, collection of organizations trying to archive as much information as possible before it disappears forever. Hope to keep the minutes about what was lost for scientists and historians to be able to use in the future.

The archiving of data is generally considered unpartised, but recent administration actions have encouraged some in the preserved community to get up.

“I consider the actions of the current administration versus the entire scientific company,” says Margaret Hedstrom, Professor Emerita information at Michigan University.

Different organizations try to pick up as much information as possible. One of the largest projects is the end of the term of web archives, a non-certainty coalition of many organizations aimed at a copy of all state data at the end of each presidential belt. Eoot archive allows individuals to appoint certain websites or data sets for conservation.

“All we can do is gather what is published and archived and make sure that it is publicly available for the future,” says James Jacobs, the American government librarian at Stanford University, which is one of the people who lead the EOD archives.

Other organizations take a specific angle on data collection. For example, an open environmental data (OEED) is trying to record data related to climate science and justice. “We are trying to follow what is reduced,” says Katie Hoeberling, the director of political initiatives at the OEEDP. “I can’t say with certainty exactly how much it used to be what was worse, but we see, especially in the last few weeks, accelerating the speed data that is removed.”
